Today, at Costa Mesa Middle/High School about 1,864 students, over 20 teachers and additional staff participated in the Great California Shakeout by first designating a student to hold a sign that shows the teachers’ name and classroom number. After this has been decided, an announcement is heard across all classrooms, stating that students are to cover their heads and neck, by crouching under their desks.  Students and teachers then are directed towards the blacktop and grass field.

Taking place on every third Thursday, during the month of October at 10:19 AM PST, schools statewide participate in this in order to practice Drop, Cover, and Hold and other important safety tips in the event of an earthquake.

Once at the designated location, ASB and staff ensure that all classes are evacuated from classrooms and the majority of the school campus. Although told to remain in a single file line and refrain from speaking to classmates, many do not listen and still talk, regardless of the expectations.

Overall, the Great California Shakeout is a drill intended to raise awareness in regard to precautions for an earthquake to actually happen. This ensures students will be knowledgeable in a real earthquake.
