Costa Mesa Middle School’s Garden Club was established in 2015 by Tina Taylor and currently has roughly thirty members. Ms. Taylor decided to start a garden club because her father taught her how to garden. This hobby eventually grew into her love for the subject.
Tina decided to continue her passion for gardening and took an agricultural course in high school. When she came to Costa Mesa, she recognized the unused space in the garden beds and decided to begin teaching students who were also as passionate about gardening as her.
Garden Club meetings are on the first and third Thursdays of the month. During the club meetings, members discuss the progress of the garden, plan cleanings, and decide what crops to plant next.
Some important positions that Garden Club includes are president, vice president, treasurer and secretary, which are roles given to members and determined by the votes of the whole club. These positions are filled by Ruby McMillan (president), Taigen Sakai (vice president), Isaac “Ziggy” Babovic (treasurer), and Brooklynn Rose (secretary). Costa Mesa Middle School has many events that Garden Club has taken part in over the years, including Club Rush, Santa’s Village, Spring Spotlight, OC Fair parking lot, and their regular cleanups that are scheduled twice a month.
During Garden Club’s future clean-ups, they plan on planting pepper, cauliflower, radish, potato, sage, and more for the upcoming fall season.
Ms. Taylor doesn’t plan on quitting Garden Club just yet. In fact, she plans to continue her club until retirement. Her future plans are to just offer the club to any students of interest and continue teaching her passion.
