Golden State Warriors’ Head Coach Steve Kerr announced that he will step down from his position of Head Coach of the US men’s national basketball team following the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Kerr stated, “To me, it’s a two-year; it’s a cycle. Pop coached a World Cup and the Olympics, now it’s my turn to pass the baton. I think that’s kind of how it should be. Frankly, it’s a huge commitment too.”
With the Olympics coming up, it’s Kerr’s last opportunity to 5 gold medals. This would be Team USA’s comeback after their play in the FIBA World Cup. With them losing to Canada, ending up in 3rd place.
Following the loss, multiple players have shown their interest in joining Team USA. Players such as LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jason Tatum, and Draymond Green among others have shown interest in playing in Paris. Kerr says, “We’d like to have a roster set sooner rather than later. We don’t have a date, but, you know, obviously, we don’t want to leave guys in limbo.”
Kerr has been trying to do what’s required for Team USA’s long term success, bringing back the culture of the 1992 “Dream Team”. With the rise of basketball internationally, just throwing our best players on the court might not be enough. Team USA suffers from constant roster changes, which other countries take advantage of as they enjoy continuity.
As Kerr closes this chapter of USA Basketball, we are left to wonder what is next for the many years to come.
