Book clubs are a great way to motivate kids to read, help them share ideas, talk about books they have read, and encourage students to get into the hobby of reading. This experience gets students reading different genres and exploring different levels of reading, which overall helps them become better readers. This is why Mrs. O’Mara started the CMMS Book Club, stating that “the purpose of the middle school’s Book Club is to get students involved in middle school and interested in reading.”

Mrs. O’Mara organizes the book club. She is a 7th grade English teacher at Costa Mesa Middle School. She hosts Book Club every Thursday from 11:50 to 12:20 during the lunch period for all students. There are no requirements in order to join.

Last year, they read different genres of books, including romance, thrillers, and mysteries. One of the books that they read was “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” by Jenny Han. They select 1–2 books to read during the quarter, and they discuss the book once a week during lunchtime.

The Mavericks’ Middle School Book Club began about eight years ago at CMMS Middle School. “I wanted to create a club for interested readers,” Mrs. O’Mara explained. “I wanted a club that would welcome everyone and help students feel connected, make new friends, discover new authors, and uncover new books and genres.” Mrs. O’Mara wanted students to find some type of interest in reading and literature and to learn about it.
